The land traces back to the 1859 Bradford/Perley homestead, and the ranch itself was named in 1914 when John Shaffer bought the property and named it for his sons, Kent and Carroll. Today, Ken Caryl Ranch is an unincorporated Jefferson County community of roughly 34,000 residents, governed by its own Metropolitan District and organized into two distinct areas: the Valley, tucked against the hogback with mature trees and an established feel, and the Plains, just east of it with some of the community’s earliest homes.
What sets Ken Caryl apart is what residents actually get access to: over 40 miles of private hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, multiple community centers with pools and fitness facilities, tennis and pickleball courts, and an equestrian center — all managed through HOA dues that keep the whole community maintained to a consistent standard.
